Pillar Blog: How to Find the Best Concord Realtor: The Complete 2026 Guide to Choosing an Agent Who Actually Gets You Results

You’re about to hand someone the keys to your largest asset, and that is not an exaggeration. For most Concord families, the home is where most of their net worth sits. It holds the memories, and it’s the foundation for whatever comes next: a smaller place, a move closer to the grandkids, a fresh start after a divorce, or settling a parent’s estate.

Most people spend more time researching a new refrigerator than the Concord realtor who will price, market and negotiate the sale of their home.

You don’t have to be one of them. Checking a real estate agent’s license in California takes about 60 seconds, costs nothing, and answers questions most sellers never think to ask. This guide walks you through it step by step. It’s one part of my larger resource, How to Find the Best Concord Realtor: The Complete 2026 Guide, which covers the full hiring process from first search to signed listing agreement.

The Problem: Anyone Can Call Themselves a Realtor Online

Search “concord realtor” and you’ll get pages of smiling headshots, glossy websites and five-star claims. What those pages won’t tell you is whether the person:

  • actually holds an active California real estate license,
  • has one year of experience or twenty,
  • works under a legitimate broker who supervises them, or
  • has been disciplined by the state.

That uncertainty is the real problem. It isn’t a lack of options. You can’t tell who’s trustworthy from a website alone, and when you’re already under the stress of a life transition, guessing wrong feels risky.

You deserve to know exactly who you’re trusting with your home before you sign anything.

The Guide: Why I Want You to Check Me First

I’m Ron Melvin, a licensed Realtor with the East Bay Real Estate Team at Keller Williams, and I serve sellers and buyers throughout Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Martinez and Brentwood. I’ve sat at a lot of kitchen tables with homeowners who told me the same thing: “I just want someone I can trust.”

So here’s my suggestion: don’t take my word for it. Verify me. My California DRE license number is 01927543. You’ll use it in the steps below, and I’d encourage you to run the same check on every Concord real estate agent you’re considering.

The Plan: 4 Steps to Verify Any Concord Realtor

Step 1: Look Up the License on the California DRE Website

The California Department of Real Estate (DRE) licenses and regulates every real estate agent and broker in the state. Its public lookup tool is the official source of truth.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to www.dre.ca.gov.
  2. Click the “Consumers” dropdown menu at the top of the page.
  3. Select “Verify a License.”
  4. Search one of two ways:
    • By license number: Enter the agent’s 8-digit license number. Try mine: 01927543.
    • By name: Enter the last name first, then the first name. Try mine: Melvin, Ron.

Where to find an agent’s license number: California law requires agents to include their license number on business cards, advertising and marketing materials. It should be easy to find on their website, email signature or listing flyers. If an agent can’t or won’t give you their number, treat that as your first warning sign.

Step 2: Read the Results

The DRE lookup answers four questions every seller should ask.

1. Does this person have an active, valid California real estate license?
Look at the license status and expiration date. You want to see an active, current license. An expired, restricted or suspended license, or one without a supervising broker, is a stop sign.

2. How long have they been licensed?
The record shows the date the license was issued. Experience isn’t everything, but you should know whether you’re hiring someone with a long track record or someone who is still learning on your home.

3. Who is their responsible broker, and where is that broker located?
In California, every salesperson must work under a licensed broker who supervises them. The lookup shows the broker’s name and address. That tells you which brokerage stands behind the agent, and who to contact if something goes wrong. If you’re comparing a Concord real estate broker against an individual agent, this is where you see how the two are connected.

4. Has the DRE taken any disciplinary action against them?
The record shows whether the state has taken formal action against the licensee, including actions that resulted from consumer complaints. A clean record is what you’re hoping for. If there is an action, read the details before deciding. Keep in mind that the lookup shows formal actions only. Complaints that didn’t lead to discipline won’t appear, which is why Steps 3 and 4 matter.

Quick answer for busy sellers: To verify a Concord realtor’s license, go to dre.ca.gov → Consumers → Verify a License, then search by license number or by name (last, first). Confirm the license is active, note the issue date, identify the responsible broker, and check for any disciplinary action.

Step 3: Google the Agent by Name

The DRE tells you whether an agent is legal. Google helps you judge whether they’re good.

Search the agent’s full name plus “realtor” and “Concord.” An active, full-time agent will usually have a substantial footprint: a website, recent listings, videos, market updates and, most importantly, client reviews.

When you read reviews, look past the star rating and pay attention to what clients actually say:

  • Did the agent communicate clearly and consistently?
  • Did they have a real pricing and marketing strategy?
  • Did they negotiate well when things got tense?
  • Do the reviews describe situations like yours, such as downsizing, an estate sale, probate or divorce?

A handful of vague, years-old reviews tells a very different story than dozens of detailed, recent ones. You can see what my clients say on Google, Zillow, Yelp and Facebook.

Step 4: Interview Them, More Than Once

A license check and a review scan will narrow your list. A conversation will make the decision.

Meet each finalist in person, and meet more than once. The first meeting shows you how they present themselves. The second shows you whether they listened. The best realtor in Concord for you is the one who remembers what matters to your family and builds a plan around it, not the one with the flashiest pitch.

Go into those meetings prepared. Use my list of 10 questions to ask before hiring a Concord realtor so you get specifics instead of sales talk. If you’re short on time, this one-minute video covers 3 questions to ask before hiring a Concord realtor.

Learn what to walk away from, too. My guide to the red flags of a bad Concord realtor lists the warning signs sellers most often miss until it’s too late.

What’s at Stake If You Skip This

Hiring the wrong agent rarely looks like a disaster on day one. It looks like a home that sits on the market for weeks, followed by price reductions. Calls go unanswered while you’re juggling an estate, a move or a family decision. And in the end you accept a weaker offer because your agent didn’t know how to negotiate.

In a market like Concord, those mistakes can cost thousands of dollars and months of stress. Sixty seconds on the DRE website and a few honest conversations can prevent them.

What Success Looks Like

Picture signing a listing agreement with complete confidence. You know your agent is licensed and in good standing, and you know who their broker is. You’ve read what real clients say, and you’ve sat across the table and heard a clear, personal plan for your home.

That’s how it should feel to find a Concord realtor: informed, protected and ready for your next chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if a Concord realtor is licensed?
Visit dre.ca.gov, open the “Consumers” menu, select “Verify a License,” and search by license number or by name (last name first).

Is a “Realtor” the same as a licensed real estate agent?
Not exactly. A DRE license is what allows someone to practice real estate in California. “Realtor” is a trademarked term for licensees who are members of the National Association of REALTORS® and agree to its Code of Ethics. You should check for the license either way.

Can I see complaints against a real estate agent in California?
The DRE lookup shows formal disciplinary actions, including those that resulted from consumer complaints. Complaints that didn’t lead to action aren’t displayed, so pair the license check with online reviews and interviews.

What’s the difference between a Concord real estate agent and a Concord real estate broker?
A broker holds a higher-level license and can operate independently and supervise agents. A salesperson must work under a responsible broker, whose name and address appear in the DRE lookup.
